American College Admission Essay

American College Admission EssayIn my previous article 'In Defense of Existing Students,' I defended the current US college admissions process by saying that our admissions system has been successful for over four decades. It seems to me that there is an opportunity to change and enhance our admissions process while also striving to find new and better ways to serve students who are deserving. While many people will argue that we are not doing enough to give students of different backgrounds and abilities the opportunity to succeed, I would argue that the fact that we have been going through these obvious changes is a good thing. How can you argue against a system that is working? The focus should be on getting better admissions essays and really making sure that the applicant is ready for college. Remember that our admissions process is not intended to handicap anyone, but to give students an opportunity to meet their educational goals.Perhaps this will be just what a student needs to put his or her mind at ease about the chances of going to college. You may have come across many college admissions essays that tell you what your odds are of getting in and what you need to do to improve your chances. Instead of being defensive about it, why not talk about what your goals are and how you plan to make it happen?Admissions officers often know exactly what type of student they are going to get at the school they attend. Of course, the student must know exactly what type of student he or she is, but if the student puts forth the effort to learn more about his or her own personality and background, then it can certainly help to sway the admissions officer's opinion.Admission essays must also highlight what the prospective student is passionate about. Some people may want to go to medical school or law school, others may want to pursue a degree in education, and some may just like to study animals in the hope of someday becoming a vet or zoo keeper.Yet, no matter what t he type of college or university the student is trying to attend, he or she should expect to provide a very personal admission essay. After all, college or university is really about life experience and one's maturity and attitude. Having an admission essay that doesn't get into detail about how it feels to be in college or university could seriously mislead someone who really wants to go to college.Take the time to carefully think about what it is you really want from a college or university. It is never too late to get started on your college admissions essay. I certainly hope that it helps you understand a little more about what it takes to write a successful admission essay and to put forth the effort to make it a success.
